Red Camera – The Scarlet

Scarlet Camera Rig

Red, the camera company that made the Red One camera has been working on a whole slew of new film cameras. It will be a wonderful day when I can use one of these. They film at a higher quality than most theatrical release films. Nonetheless, I’m more than content with my HVX, which is capable of quality images. To stir my abilities, I’m planning to get something filmed either this weekend or the next depending on how soon I can fully map out the project. Should be a good result since the idea for it is pretty cool already.

Dunes by the beach

Good news! I bought myself a new black Martin Acoustic guitar. It sounds amazing and I’m thoroughly enjoying the lighter strings. I hope I can play it here in front of my friends here before, well you know. If you don’t know, then you don’t know me that well. I know, mysterious. Nonetheless, the Martin is replacing my Gibson Les Paul Special that I’ve had for about 4 years now. It served me well.

I haven’t had the chance to shoot anything since the trip because I’ve been working full time since I got back. Long story. I lined up a sweet job and got a car. So, life is moving fast and swimmingly all at once. So, the image in this post is again from my last week in New Zealand before I came back. I’m working on getting a bit of the footage together this weekend so I can send it off to various places. I hope someone is interested. If not, I will call it practice work and will store it in an archive until I desire to use it for my own personal projects.

The Trip Revisited

May 10th, 2008

Miles of Dunes

I’ve been back in the US for over a week now, and I feel like I’m in a foreign land. I guess I never imagined that staying in Oz and NZ for only a few months would have this effect on me. It’s kinda cool too. Mind you, I’m doing well here. I lined up a contractor position and have steady job in less than a week. Crazy eh? I even got a used car in three days. Day One: find car. Day Two: buy car. Day Three: register car. I feel super blessed. I’m putting together a DVD today of samples of footage from the trip to entice companies to purchase it all. How cool would that be if I could earn money for those three months away? That would rock my face off!

The Return

Waikato River In The Morning

This is my last post on this wonderful trip. I have been incognito due to the remote nature of this part of the trip. I spent the last few days in New Zealand filming mostly time lapse footage. I did not have the chance to get the perfect sun set where the sun sinks below the horizon of the ocean. However, I did get heaps and heaps of beautiful shots. I also had a chance for some major chillax. This has been a wonderful part of my holiday, but I enjoyed Australia the most and wish I could have stayed longer. I recommend this sort of trip to everyone my age because I came out of it changed and different. It even affected my accent a bit. Well, I’ll probably write again with a few more images when I get to the States. Until then, I have included a video of a time lapse I shot this morning. Enjoy.

Kookaburra perched on an old gum tree

Kookaburra spies a piece of crab

I went to a place called Port Stephens yesterday. I have footage of various boats and such, but the really cool part were the shots I was able to capture of a little kookaburra. I had actually been wanting to get some footage of them for a good while now. It made yesterday’s trip an amazing day. I also have some wondrous footage from around sunset. There is one shot in particular that I absolutely love. I hope I can get more like it in the future because the gold and pink colors made me want to stare at it for a long time.

Gray Roos of Insanity

April 3rd, 2008

Gray Roos near Morisset

I went out to a place near where I am staying that has a huge mob of gray roos. They are quite tame because people often feed them bread. So, I ended up getting very close to these critters. You could easily touch them and look at them in the eyes. The crazy part was that they are located in the yards outside the Morisset Mental Institution. Oh well. It was totally worth the trip because roos are normally very hard to see in the wild.

Koalas in a Golden Hue

April 2nd, 2008

Koala in Blackbutt Reserve

I went to a nature reserve yesterday, mainly to see koalas. I think most of the shots from that trip turned out lovely. I also have a lot of footage from a pier and also along the coastline. It was a good day and I look forward to a continuing good weekend with an afternoon of filming roos in a park today. More on that tomorrow perhaps.

EP Recording

March 24th, 2008

Piano played by Anna at the recording

This last Saturday I got up at 4:30 am and drove to a studio to get to the recording for the band I’ve mentioned in my emails. I brought my rig to the session and captured the image above along with a number of other shots (~13 minutes of footage). It was a long day, but I hopped into a spa in the evening to loosen the muscles. I made a video for last Friday that turned out pretty much how I was intending. Some time next week, I will leave this area and head up the coast. I’m not looking forward to it, but I know that it is something I should do. The cool thing is that I’ll be mixing for the band this Saturday. At first, it also included Friday, but that ended up not happening. This trip has rocked my world, and I recommend something like this for every person I know.

Horses in the Paddock

March 6th, 2008

Video still image of a white horse

Well, I went out around midday and found the horses in a different paddock from where they had been the other day. Yes, they were tame and did not run at me. The image above is the money shot I was able to get before heading back. This white horse is getting fairly old and wasn’t as energetic as the other one. I’ll be going into town this afternoon to spend the weekend there. It should be another fun filled weekend once more. In the mean time, I have a few hours to kill. I will be sure to bring my still camera for Sunday because I am going to go watch the live recording at Hillsong that night. Until next time.

Puppies For Sale

February 20th, 2008

More Pups

The tan kelpies were put up for sale yesterday. A mother and her daughter already came to get all four of the tan ones. So, now there are only three black pups left. They are not going to be sold though. I am going to get some more video of these mongrels up here soon. The reason I haven’t is that I was tired last night and I need to get up this morning for whatever tasks lie ahead. I wake up to the song Halcyon +On + On by the artist Orbital. If you don’t remember what one that is or haven’t heard the song, it is used towards the beginning of the movie Hackers. Ah the old 90s movies. In any case, I have iTunes setup to start playing at 6:00 every morning. It’s a very peaceful way to get up. I better get to breakfast now. The puppies will probably have to debut again via video after the weekend. I’m a little too busy to get any updates until Monday. Until we meet again or at least until I write again.
